Traditional Work

Traditional work is the term used to describe what most people think of when they think of work; the nine to
five grind that causes rush hour in the morning with people trying to get to work and then again in the evening
with the same people trying to get home.

When you are looking for a change to your career or life for that matter, it important to understand how well
you may fit into the traditional work environment.  It could be that you are unhappy because you are more
suited for
non-traditional work but have just never explored those options.

Some benefits of the traditional work model:

  • Generally you have set hours - which means you actually get to go home at the end of the day
  • Low risk – You aren’t responsible for making the big business-making or breaking decisions.
  • Good Benefits – Usually jobs in the traditional work model will offer benefits life health insurance, dental
insurance, maybe some life insurance, things like that (one of the great benefits that companies used to
offer is almost gone forever – The Pension Plan)
  • Overall Structure – You generally know when you are supposed to work and how much you will be
    getting paid.

Obviously many, many people depend on a traditional job or work environment for their livelihood and if you
are confident in your skills and are passionate about your work, a traditional job can be very rewarding.

Some potential negatives of the traditional work model:

  • Generally you have set hours – This can result in a lack or at least a perceived lack of freedom.
  • Not as stable as it used to be – Corporations are constantly going through restructures which many times
result in job loss.  As an employee you generally don’t have much say in the matter.
  • You can lose focus on your life – If you don’t make a distinct effort to focus on where you are in your life,
you can get lost in the ‘routine’ of your job and lose track of your life. (I know it sounds weird but I’ve
talked to people who like what they do but look up one day and wonder how fifteen years have passed and
they are still sitting in the same chair)
  • You have a BOSS!!!! – Bosses can be great and they can be really, really bad and again you usually don’t
have control over who your boss is.

Take control

When looking at traditional work it is important to remember that even though you are not trying to own your
own business or work as a consultant, you really do need to take control of your situation.  Too many times I've
seen people just flow through the river of corporate America with no plan.  They just end up wherever the flow
takes them.  It is your career and your life after all.  No one should have any more say in what happens in your
life than you.
